Fondaco dei Tedeschi status in 2026
The Fondaco dei Tedeschi stands on the Grand Canal next to the Rialto Bridge, on the San Marco side. The department store inside and its rooftop terrace have been closed since 1 May 2025.
That means no terrace visits can be booked. Before the closure, the terrace was visited in free slots of about 15 minutes, reserved online in advance. That routine ended with the closure, so do not plan around it.
Whether the building reopens, and for what use, is open. A closure of the store is not the same as a permanent end to every future use of the building.

Our take: while the building is closed, a boat ride is the way to see its canal facade up close.

Fondaco dei Tedeschi: what is open, what is not
A short status table for planning in 2026.
| Part | Status in 2026 | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Department store | Closed since 1 May 2025 | Do not plan a shopping visit |
| Rooftop terrace | Closed | No reservation available |
| Facade on the Grand Canal | Visible from outside | Look from around the bridge or from the water |
| Reopening or new use | Open question | Check current news before a trip |
For most visitors, the useful choice is the outside view. Combine it with the bridge and the market instead of a terrace slot.
Fondaco dei Tedeschi history
The Fondaco was the trading house of the German-speaking merchants in Venice. After a fire, it was rebuilt from 1506 to 1508. Later it served as a post office. In more recent years it was a department store with a terrace on the roof.
The name says what it was: the trading house of the Germans. It stands beside the Rialto Bridge, the heart of the old trading district.
For the bridge itself, read the Rialto Bridge history. The trading district around it is described on the Rialto market page.
Seeing the Fondaco from outside
The facade faces the Grand Canal beside the bridge. You can see it around the Rialto Bridge and from the water. Vaporetto line 1 stops at Rialto and at Rialto Mercato. A ticket is required; a single ticket costs โฌ9.50 for 75 minutes in 2026, and a 24-hour ticket costs โฌ25.
Details on boats, lines and tickets are with the Vaporetto line 1 guide. For a free view over the canal, see the best views of the Rialto Bridge.

What to do instead of the terrace
The Fondaco was a viewpoint. The bridge area still has views.
Cross the bridge
The footpath over the arch is free and open to everyone. It is a public walkway over steps, so be ready for stairs.
Bridge facts โUse the quays
The Riva del Vin gives a classic view of the bridge. The Riva del Ferro shows the other side. Neither needs a reservation or a ticket.
Best views โCome back in the evening
The bridge and the quays look different in the evening. There are no fixed lighting times, so treat dusk as a matter of sky and season.
The bridge at night โOn the San Marco side of the bridge
Two places close to the Fondaco.
Campo San Bartolomio
The square near the bridge has a monument to Goldoni. The statue dates from 1883 and is by the sculptor Antonio Dal Zotto. Some Rialto tours meet at Campo San Bartolomeo.
Walking tours from Rialto โCalle dei Fabbri
The street name points to the smiths' workshops that once stood here. A plaque recalls the brothers Attilio and Emilio Bandiera.
