Best time to visit the Rialto Bridge

The bridge is open to walk across all year, so the best time depends on what you want around it. The market has its own days and hours. The weather changes the feel of the Canal Grande. High water is most likely in autumn and winter. There is no single best month, only trade-offs.

Spring and September can offer milder temperatures than midsummer. That does not promise dry weather, quiet streets or a flood-free day. If you plan around the market, look at the Rialto Market hours before anything else.

Highs and lows are averages of daily maximum and minimum temperatures, not records. For most visitors who want mild weather without midsummer heat, May and September fit best. Winter is cooler and drier by these averages, but it overlaps with the high-water season.

Our pick: the bridge at sunset

Our take: early evening is calmer than midday, and this short walk starts in San Polo at that hour.

Crowds and time of day

How to plan around the crowds.

Early or late in the day

Trying early in the morning or later in the evening is a general tip for any busy spot in Venice. Quiet hours are not guaranteed at any time of day, so do not count on empty steps.

Market visits

Plan around the market days. The fish market runs Tuesday to Saturday 07:00–14:00 and is closed on Sunday and Monday. The fruit and vegetable market runs Monday to Saturday 07:00–20:00. In practice the stalls are busiest in the morning, so aim for then. The Rialto Bridge at night page covers the evening side.

Carnival

Carnival 2027 runs from 23 January to 9 February 2027. Check the dates and the events before you book a room.

Acqua alta and the MOSE barriers

Calm, practical points for autumn and winter.

When high water occurs

Acqua alta means exceptionally high tides. High water occurs mostly in autumn and winter, with November and December the most likely months. The MOSE barriers change how often water reaches the streets, so read this as a seasonal pattern, not a forecast.

What the numbers mean

Flooding starts in the Rialto area at about 105 cm, and boat service changes from about 95 cm. Use these levels as orientation only. They are not a rule for the bridge surface.

MOSE

When the barriers are raised, the sea outside and the lagoon are measured separately, relative to the gauge at Punta della Salute. An outer sea level is therefore not the water depth on the bridge steps. Check the city's tide forecast on the day before you plan a low-lying route. More on this at Piazza San Marco and acqua alta.

The city access fee in 2026

A short note, since it is often confused with a bridge ticket.

The Rialto Bridge has no entry ticket. The separate access fee for day visitors applied on 60 non-consecutive days between 3 April and 26 July 2026, from 08:30 to 16:00. It ended on 26 July 2026, and the 2026 prices of €5 and €10 and the 2026 calendar do not carry over to 2027. More in the Venice access fee guide.

Best time to visit: frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit the Rialto Bridge?

There is no single best month. By the climate averages, May and September are milder than midsummer. That is an interpretation, and it does not promise dry or quiet days.

When is the fish market open?

Tuesday to Saturday 07:00–14:00, closed on Sunday and Monday. The fruit and vegetable market is open Monday to Saturday 07:00–20:00.

Does the MOSE stop all high water?

A flood-free visit is never guaranteed. The barriers separate the lagoon from the sea when they are raised, but the level on the day still matters. Check the tide forecast before you go.

When is Carnival 2027?

From 23 January to 9 February 2027. Check dates and events before you book.

Is the Rialto Bridge open all year?

The bridge is a public footpath with no entry ticket. Weather, events or works can change access on a given day, so check the situation before you go.

Is this the official site of the City of Venice?

No. This is an independent guide, not connected to the City of Venice, the tide centre or any tour operator.
