The Rialto Bridge at a glance

The Rialto Bridge is a stone arch over the Grand Canal. It joins San Polo on one side with San Marco on the other, and it sits at the edge of the old trading and market district of Rialto. The arch is about 48 m long and was designed by Antonio da Ponte. You cross it on foot by the stairs, and nobody asks for a ticket.

This guide covers the bridge and what surrounds it: walking tours and food tours that start near Rialto, the Rialto Market, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, the views from the quays, the bridge in the evening, history and facts, how to arrive, what to see nearby and where to stay. Prices are in euros for 2026 and can change.

Where to start

Pick the question closest to your trip.

You want a guide

Compare the formats on the Rialto Bridge tours page. A Venice walking tour follows the streets of San Polo and San Marco, while a Venice food tour stops at the market and in wine bars.

You are here for a few hours

Cross the bridge, look at the market, then take a cicchetto and a small glass of wine. The nearby page lists twelve places within an easy walk.

You like evening light

The bridge looks different after dark, and the quays give you the view. See the bridge at night for the walks and the rules.

You like history

A bridge of boats, then wood, then stone: the history and the facts page explain how it changed.

A few things to know before you go

The points that most often cause questions.

The bridge has no ticket

You cross it on foot for free. The day-visitor fee for Venice is a separate rule: it applied on selected days from 3 April to 26 July 2026, between 08:30 and 16:00, at โ‚ฌ5 if paid early and โ‚ฌ10 if paid in the last three days. The fee ended on 26 July 2026. Details are in the arrival guide, and the full picture is in the Venice access fee guide.

The Fondaco is closed

The department store and roof terrace of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi have been closed since 1 May 2025. The building can be seen from the outside. Do not plan a roof terrace visit around it, and read the Fondaco page for the current picture.

The market days differ

The fish market runs Tuesday to Saturday from 07:00 to 14:00. The fruit and vegetable market runs Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 20:00. So Monday is not closed for the whole of Rialto, but the fish stalls are. Go in the morning.

Guided groups have limits

Accompanied groups in Venice are limited to 25 visitors, and guides wear a visible ID. A group should not block the stairs of a bridge. If you walk with a group, keep to the side.

The completion year

The stone bridge was built from 1588 to 1591 or 1592, depending on how the building period is counted. The history page explains the people behind the project.

Beyond the bridge

Other guides in the same network.

The bridge is one stop on the Grand Canal. For the water itself, with vaporetto lines, gondola rides and the palaces, see the Grand Canal guide. For the square and the basilica, go to the Piazza San Marco guide. This site stays with Rialto.

Rialto Bridge: frequently asked questions

Do I need a ticket for the Rialto Bridge?

No. The bridge is a public footpath, and there is no ticket for it. The day-visitor fee for Venice is a different matter and ended on 26 July 2026.

How long does it take to see the bridge?

Crossing it takes a few minutes. Most visitors add the market, a stop at the quay for the view and a bite in a wine bar, which fills a morning or an evening. A guided tour from Rialto typically takes a few hours, and each tour example on this site gives its own length.

Is a tour worth it?

If you want the stories and the food, a guide helps, especially in the market district. If you only want to cross the bridge and look around, you can do that on your own. See the tours page for formats and prices.

Can I cross the bridge with a wheelchair or a stroller?

The bridge is crossed by stairs, so do not plan on a step-free crossing. The city's step-free route reaches the market district by boat. The arrival page covers the water stops.

When is the market open?

The fish market runs Tuesday to Saturday from 07:00 to 14:00, and it is closed on Sunday and Monday. The fruit and vegetable market runs Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 20:00. Stalls may close before the end time, so go in the morning. See the market page.

Is rialto-bridge.com the official website?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It has no connection to the City of Venice, any museum, a tour operator, a gondola service or a hotel.
